Stocking your makeup bag is no small investment. After you tick off foundation, mascara, the proper brushes, and a few fun lipsticks and eye shadows, the cost begins to seriously add up. That’s why losing yours (as we’ve been unlucky enough to do recently) can be a serious bummer. But what if you can’t afford to replace it all in one fell swoop? If you’re going to need to shop in stages, where should you begin? To prep for just such an emergency, we consulted Washington’s makeup wiz kids. The people on this list have worked on countless magazine shoots and made up the faces of visiting celebs, Supreme Court justices—even Bill Clinton. Trust us when we say they know what they’re talking about.

Laura Bateman
“The first thing I’d re-buy is my Clarisonic Mia. I use it every day—sometimes twice a day—and take it with me on every trip. It provides a really deep clean, removing makeup better than any other method. I truly believe that clean, healthy skin is the ideal canvas for a beautiful makeup application.”

Leah McKay
“I would have to re-buy a mascara and lip gloss immediately, followed by under-eye concealer. Under-eye concealer is a must for immediately brightening the most shadowy area on our face, whether it’s from dehydration, allergies, fatigue, or just genetics.” McKay recommends Bobbi Brown Buff lip gloss and Laura Mercier and Tarte concealers.

Carola Myers
“My Eyebrow Defining Palette, in medium, by Ardell. I for one look forward to Sunday night, for me Sunday night is “beauty night”.

After a long week at the office and a weekend often spent making other people beautiful, I try to devote one night a week to taking care of myself .

Don't let your beauty routine get pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. Start your week off on the right foot by indulging in a few hours of “me time”.

My Sunday night ritual goes like this:

First, turn off the TV, computer, phone and bright lights. Then:

SHOWER

I step in the shower, but before turning on the water I exfoliate my dry skin with an all-over body polish, like Fresh Brown Sugar Polish. Then I turn on the water and rinse off the scrub, after which I go through my normal body wash and shampooing routine. After shampooing, I love to apply a thick coat of a deep conditioning treatment for the hair, such as Kerastase Masquintense . Then I put a shower cap on my head and step out to towel off. (The shower cap traps the heat from the shower and helps the treatment penetrate the hair)

FACE

While I let my shower cap perform it's magic, I exfoliate my face using an at home micro-dermabrasion kit from Olay of Olay. This is a two-step process that I do every week to keep the skin cells turning over. It keeps my skin fresh and glowing, and allows for better absorption of my skin care products. I then floss and brush my teeth carefully, gargle a whitening mouthwash, and use my teeth whitening trays from my dentist. Crest White Strips also work wonderfully. Then I do an eyebrow check, plucking out any miscellaneous hairs using my trusty Tweezerman tweezers.

BODY

To ensure my hair mask has about 20 minutes to soak in, I take a few more minutes to remove any old nail polish and clean up my nails. Your skin is softer after a shower, so it’s a perfect time to push back and trim the cuticles. I cut, file and buff and before I know it, it’s time to hop back in the shower and rinse my Kerastase off. After this is done, I dry off and start the moisturizing process, which is uber important after exfoliation. I’m currently using a very gentle over-the-counter retinol product on my face every other night, one of the most effective anti-aging ingredients recommended by dermatologists. While the RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Night Cream is soaking in, I slather on a self tanning lotion on my body, such as my favorite from Clarins, using a different heavy cream on my hands and feet. I love this one from Egyptian Magic. (It really is magical). You are going to laugh, but I cut the top off of an old pair of socks, so my foot cream can soak into my heels while I do my at home pedicure. It looks ridiculous walking around in toe-less socks, but it actually works! Finally, I apply some hard-working facial antiaging cream such as Caudalie Premiere Cru and finish with moisturizing lip balm. I love Bobbi Brown’s Hydrating Lip Balm and it’s luxurious feeling on my lips.

Lastly, while the kettle is heating water for a nice cup of Yogi Detox tea (to help remove the toxins of everyday life) I’ll sit and paint my toenails. I’ll follow with a quick swipe of a nude nail polish on my hands, such Essie Mademoiselle, then make my tea and find my favorite chair to put a dent in the many magazines I’ve let pile up.

This little routine is a great way to prepare my mind and body for the week ahead and puts me in a great mood come Monday morning when I wake up looking rested, refreshed and ready for whatever may come my way.
